At my age, I can’t.........(fill in the blank - lose weight; exercise; learn new skills).

Identifying as weak and unable to learn new skills can prevent you from living a healthy life at any age.

We accomplish great tasks, get ourselves educated, raise and support children in a challenging world, teach, heal, caretake, build, invent, litigate, chair, direct, innovate, open businesses, climb mountains, show up in our lives every day and our opinion of our abilities to do hard shit is – I can’t. I don’t know how.

We have attached ourselves to weakness as an identity.

While I think this is a crazy place and we live it here in our heads, I don’t have to look far to see that I am charged with the same offense.  Sometimes no matter how much I accomplish in a day, I think I didn’t do enough.  I could have done more.

Notice your thoughts about your ability to handle life.

If you think you aren’t capable of losing weight; that it is impossible to bear a feeling of shame or loneliness; that you are not designed to learn a new skill, think again.

Notice your thoughts about your ability to learn new things.

Do you believe it is just impossible to resist an urge or craving for your comfort food?

There’s a good reason bucking that urge isn’t so easy.  Your brain and its associated neural pathways and nervous systems are all in cahoots to get you to eat that bowl of ice cream.  Craving high caloric foods is part of our brain’s survival mechanism.

Unfortunately, our brain has not evolved to discern what foods will actually keep us thriving. Yet, our body is sending us messages every day.

The key is to become aware of the messages.

Managing an urge is like managing a toddler.  It can be loud and make you feel very uncomfortable (especially in public), but for the toddler’s sake you will set limits.

This week’s podcast I discuss how learned, yet unconscious thoughts can keep us stuck and overweight.

Listen to how I explain that an urge has no power over you and teach you how to master it.

AND THE WINNER IS…..I am excited to announce the winner of the MOTIV health tracker:  Joan-Alice Burn from Delaware.  Joan and her brother write a blog called the Over 50 Roadmap (over50roadmap.com), which looks at life over 50 from the perspective of our purpose, our connections our health and our wealth. Love this message. Thank you to Joan for listening to It’s Never Too Late to Lose Weight! Podcast.
